{"id":3846,"date":"2020-12-19T22:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-19T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsmediauk.org\/nma-secures-travel-exemption-for-journalists\/"},"modified":"2024-05-03T09:39:53","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T08:39:53","slug":"nma-secures-travel-exemption-for-journalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsmediauk.org\/blog\/2020\/12\/19\/nma-secures-travel-exemption-for-journalists\/","title":{"rendered":"NMA Secures Travel Exemption For Journalists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NMA secured with DCMS last week a quarantine exemption for UK journalists and other essential news media workers who need to travel abroad for work assignments.<\/p>\n<p>The exemption came into effect in England on Saturday 21 November 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Lynne Anderson, NMA deputy chief executive, said: &ldquo;Protecting free movement of journalists abroad during a pandemic is of vital importance.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With people living under restrictions and in confinement across the world, there is a greater need and reliance for trusted, reliable news and information to keep the public informed of Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Therefore it is imperative that UK journalists are able to carry out their role overseas without restriction.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This exemption applies to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UK journalists (a person who has been issued with a UK Press Card such as reporters, photographers, videographers and other editorial staff) who need to be able to work in the UK on their return from overseas travel<\/li>\n<li>International journalists (a person who has been issued with an International Press Card) who need to travel to the UK on work assignments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To be considered eligible, qualifying individuals must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hold a valid UK Press Card issued by a gatekeeper under the scheme managed by the UK Press Card Authority. Gatekeepers are listed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukpresscardauthority.co.uk\/\">here<\/a> <strong>or<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hold a valid International Press Card issued by a national organisation under the scheme managed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifj.org\/press-card.html\">the International Federation of Journalists<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Confirmation of such accreditation may be requested at various points of your journey. Qualifying individuals must also be travelling for a purpose which is essential to their work as a journalist.<\/p>\n<p>If you qualify for a travel quarantine exemption, you still need to follow the same health guidance and national restrictions as people who live in the UK. Check the guidance for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/new-national-restrictions-from-5-november\">national restrictions in England<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/articles\/coronavirus-covid-19-regulations-guidance-what-restrictions-mean-you\">national restrictions in Northern Ireland<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/coronavirus-covid-19\/\">national restrictions in Scotland<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gov.wales\/coronavirus-regulations-guidance\">national restrictions in Wales<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will need to complete&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/provide-journey-contact-details-before-travel-uk\">the passenger locator form<\/a> before you travel to the UK. You will not need to self-isolate when travelling within the UK for essential work purposes, however you should self-isolate at all other times.<\/p>\n<p>When travelling you should carry a UK Press Card or International Press Card and a letter from your employer or commissioning editor which includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>your personal details, such as name and address<\/li>\n<li>contact details for your employer or commissioning editor<\/li>\n<li>confirmation that you are travelling to or from the UK in the course of your work as a journalist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you would like to apply for an NMA press card, please contact <a href=\"mailto:laura@newsmediauk.org\">Laura Skerrett<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All usual&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/browse\/visas-immigration\">immigration requirements<\/a> for entering and working in the UK still apply.
