Reporters Without Borders published their 2021 World Press Freedom Index this week, showing that \u201cjournalism, the main vaccine against disinformation, is completely or partly blocked in 74 per cent of the 180 countries ranked\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Index reveals that journalism is \u201ctotally blocked or seriously impeded\u201d in 73 countries and constrained in 59 others, showing a \u201cdramatic deterioration\u201d in public access to information and an \u201cincrease in obstacles to news coverage\u201d. RSF argued that the Covid-19 pandemic has been used to block journalists\u2019 access to information and reporting in the field.<\/p>\n

The UK is currently ranked in 33rd place, slightly higher than last year where it was ranked 35th. The UK\u2019s global score is currently 21.59, down from last year\u2019s 22.93. The RSF notes that press freedom in the UK remains a concern, citing \u201ca secret Government unit\u201d which \u201cappeared to service as a clearing house for freedom of information requests\u201d and media outlets being \u201cblacklisted or facing other restrictions\u201d, as reasons for their concern.<\/p>\n

Europe, along with the Americas, remain \u201cthe most favourable continents for press freedom\u201d, despite Europe registering \u201ca sizeable deterioration in its \u2018Abuses\u2019 indicator\u201d with violent attacks doubling in the EU and Balkans.<\/p>\n

The Financial Times reports events in Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic<\/a> and the death of journalist George Karaivaz on April 9, have \u201cunderscored the precarious situation for independent journalism\u201d in the EU.<\/p>\n

\u201cIdiosyncratic as they may be, these observations illustrate a sinister trend: that independent journalism is becoming harder<\/a> and more dangerous to practise in parts of Europe\u201d, the FT said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile such problems may be worse elsewhere in the world, a region wanting to \u201cpromote its way of life\u201d must secure the conditions for an independent, critical fourth estate at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cMedia freedoms are not a luxury; without them democracy and good policymaking wither. Mere expressions of concern from the EU and the rest of Europe are welcome, but too little and too late. Against those who would undermine public scrutiny, the best defence is a good offence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Christophe Deloire, RSF secretary-general, has said: \u201cJournalism is the best vaccine against disinformation. Unfortunately, its production and distribution are too often blocked by political, economic, technological and, sometimes, even cultural factors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn response to the virality of disinformation across borders, on digital platforms and via social media, journalism provides the most effective means of ensuring that public debate is based on a diverse range of established facts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Index shows Nordic nations at the top, with Norway ranked first, Finland second, Sweden third and Denmark fourth.<\/p>\n

The Index reports only 12 countries (7 per cent) ranked as good, dropping from 13 countries last year. Countries considered \u201cbad\u201d include Brazil, India, Mexico and Russia, whilst China is considered among the Index\u2019 worst countries, along with Turkmenistan, Eritrea and North Korea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
