{"id":3290,"date":"2022-05-19T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-19T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsmediauk.org\/whittingdale-welcomes-repeal-of-section-40\/"},"modified":"2024-05-03T10:22:15","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T09:22:15","slug":"whittingdale-welcomes-repeal-of-section-40","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsmediauk.org\/blog\/2022\/05\/19\/whittingdale-welcomes-repeal-of-section-40\/","title":{"rendered":"Whittingdale Welcomes Repeal Of Section 40"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Culture Secretary John Whittingdale MP said in a Queen&#8217;s Speech debate this week that he looks forward to the repeal of Section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act 2013 which acts as a \u201csword of Damocles hanging over a free press.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Whittingdale said: \u201cI look forward to the inclusion in the Bill of the repeal of section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act 2013, which is a sword of Damocles hanging over a free press allowing a future government to impose punitive costs unless they sign up to the government\u2019s version of regulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe removal of that was in the Conservative manifesto and I very much hope that we will fulfil that manifesto commitment in that Bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week the News Media Association welcomed provisions in the Media Bill to repeal Section 40. NMA chief executive Owen Meredith said: \u201cWe welcome provisions announced within the Media Bill to repeal Section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act 2013 \u2013 a Conservative Party manifesto commitment.
